Foodbank organisers in Ellon have praised the town’s Tesco for providing a little festive cheer for local families.

The Ellon distribution centre of the Aberdeenshire North Foodbank was able to brighten up Christmas for them - thanks to the generosity of the store.

Foodbank co-ordinator Sandra Coutie was contacted by the company on Christmas Eve to informed her that, as part of a national initiative, the store was making available food which would otherwise have gone to waste.

Items were distributed to the families on Christmas Eve by Foodbank volunteers.

Sandra said: “There is a lot of discussion in the media about the amount of food that goes to waste in this country so it is good to see a company like Tesco doing their bit to minimise this and help people out at this time of year.

“Our local store has been a great support to the foodbank since it was set up in June, 2014.

“In addition we have a great team of dedicated volunteers who give up their time to work in the foodbank.”

The foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust network, was moving to the Ythan Centre this week from its base at the Auchterellon Pavilion, at the rear of Auchterellon School.

Opening hours will be Tuesday 1-3pm (changed) and Friday 10am-12pm.
