First ScotRail, who operate the Aberdeen to Inverness service through Inverurie and Insch Stations, have been awarded Rail Operator of the Year at the prestigious National Transport Awards in London on Thursday (October 2).
Judges were impressed with the train operator’s wide range of successes, including the biggest launch of free wifi in the UK, its smooth handling of major events, and its introduction of pioneering smart card ticketing.
The company carried more than 87 million customers in 2013/14 - the tenth
consecutive annual rise. It was announced earlier this years that passenger numbers using Inverurie Station had risen by a massive 254 per cent since 2004/05. And in April this year it was also announced that £170 million would be invested in the Aberdeen – Inverness line over the next five years by the Scottish Government.
The latest independent National Rail Passenger Survey put the firms overall customer satisfaction at 90 per cent, equalling its record level, and eight percentage points above the UK average for train operators.
On the same evening, First ScotRail and partners - including Transport Scotland – were named as Overall Winner at the ACoRP Community Rail Awards, for their combined work to deliver a joined-up Community Rail Strategy.
