Tributes have been paid to a respected Ellon citizen who has died after six months in hospital.

Bill Johnstone, 70, passed away peacefully at Peterhead’s Ugie Hospital on April 19 with his family at his bedside.

He was born in New Pitsligo where he met Kathleen at a local function, leading to more than 40 years of marriage which produced daughters Elaine and Barbra.

Bill was a quantity surveyor with construction company Hall and Tawse and moved to Ellon in the late 1960s.

He became a popular member of the community, probably best known for his devotion to local football team Ellon United.

Bill was a keen golfer, though by his own pawky observation never going to win a major, but quite astute when picking winners at both golf and horse racing.

A noted pool player, played at his favourite watering hole the Station Hotel bar, though if you looking for a fourth member of your quiz team, Bill was a good choice with his extensive general knowledge.

His intellect was seen at its best in the hotel bar where he frequently jousted with his close friends Alan Dent and Alan Brown, and all without recourse to Google.

But for most it was his winsome, warm smile that made him such a favourite, and was no doubt responsible for winning Kathleen all those years ago.

Love simply was all around when they were together, best reflected in the difficult months of illness when Kathleen appeared at his bedside to be greeted by the most welcoming smile.

While you felt you were intruding on a very special relationship, it was a joy to witness. Bill Johnstone will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched.
