Ythan Fiddlers are holding a concert later this month to thank those who helped with fund-raising for last summer’s Canada trip.

The show will be held in Pitmedden village hall on Friday, March 27, at 7.30pm.

It will be free and feature much of the music played during the successful visit last August.

The group started their trip with an impromptu session at Reykjavik Airport in Iceland where the group had a short stop-over between flights. The first day saw the fiddlers’ team up with the local Scottish Country Dance Group in Halifax, providing a varied programme of dance and music to a sell-out audience.

They also attended an outdoor concert at Broad Cove on the west side of Cape Breton close to Judique, the home of many famous Cape Breton Fiddlers.

The group, intending only to take in the music, were quickly invited to play a set of tunes and enjoyed experiencing some Nova Scotia fiddle music before leaving for the Gaelic college in St Ann’s, their base for the rest of the stay.

The trip also included combining with the Cape Breton Fiddlers for a concert in the Great Hall of Clans, at the Gaelic college, with each group playing an individual session and teaming up for the grand finale.

The last day was spent visiting the Big Fiffle in Sydney, a metal instrument 10 metres tall which welcomes cruise ships to the harbour, and then later a trip to Iona, a traditional Highland village reconstructed as a museum.
