Formartine suffer narrow Dee-feat in opening clash

FORMARTINE got the Grill League Cup game underway on a perfect day for football and the Dee had the first chance with a free kick but the effort was blasted over the bar.

The home side took the lead in the sixth minute. Stainer left Seivwright fo
r dead on the right wing and sent in a cross to Brownhill who drilled his shot wide of the unsighted Horne into the net.

United replied and a cross into the box was met by Beattie but Pennet smothered the ball at the striker's feet. In the ninth minute a Forsyth cross found Brown, his attempt was taken by Pennet. A free kick from Lawson caused concern in the Dee defence and the ball was cleared for a corner.

In the 19th minute Beattie was sent clear but his cross drifted behind. A corner for Dee found Brownhill and he sent his header wide.

Good play in the 22nd minute from United ended with a corner being awarded. Seivwright sent a lovely ball through to Beattie in the 33rd minute, as the forward closed in on goal Pennet made a fine save with his legs to send the ball wide of goal.

United were unlucky two minutes later when a cross was met by Beattie at the back post but his volley came back off the upright. A Dee free kick was deflected by Taylor but the ball went wide. Beattie had another chance in the 43rd minute but as he closed in on goal, a last ditch tackle prevented a shot.

Three minutes into the half, a cross into the area was met by Lawson but the attempt went over. In the 67th minute Stainer broke through but a timely tackle from Lawson saved the day. A long clearance from Horne found Beattie but his ball into the box was cleared.

A ball from Horne gave Forsyth a chance but Long made a saving tackle. In the 77th minute a Booth free kick went wide. With minutes left, good work from Booth saw his cross headed behind for a corner. In the 89th minute Horne made a comfortable catch from Stainer's header.
