INVERURIE Locos held out for almost an hour to a side sitting comfortably sixth in the Scottish Championship, but in torrential rain they joined three other Highland League sides in making their exit from the William Hill Scottish Cup 3rd Round.
Going into the tie armed with a huge dossier provided by Aberdeen FC who beat Alloa on penalties in the League Cup this season, Messrs Buchan and Coull were well prepared for a tactical battle and so it proved
Although three divisions below their opponents, Locos contributed to a great game featuring clever passing. Kevin Cawley had the first chance for the Wasps, his effort narrowly clearing Andy Reid’s crossbar. But the visitors were in no mood for making their hosts look good. In 13 minutes David Ross supplied the cross for Dean Donaldson to head wide. Former Dons reserve keeper Scott Bain then had to look lively, punching away from the head of Martin Bavidge following a dangerous cross by Neil McLean. Wading in to show the young players in the team they had nothing to fear, Mark Souter sent in a shot which went narrowly wide.
However the game turned in the second half following the introduction of the pacy Eddie Ferns. The sub provided the pass for striker Kevin Cawley to score from 16 yards.
Bain then made a diving save from Kieran Adams as Locos hunted an equaliser but were unfortunate to concede a second after Ferns was again the cross provider, Ben Gordon netting Alloa’s second.
Bain was a real hero for Alloa, tipping a Bavidge chip shot on to his bar and over but late on another sub Alex Salmon netted goal number three.
