Colony beat Burghead but fail to top League Cup group

Colony Park Juniors finished as runners up in Group 3 of the Grill League Cup on goal difference despite winning their final match.

Dyce Junior won the group thankls to their supperior goal difference.

Colony started the match going forward winning a couple of corners in the opening minutes which the Burghead defence cleared.

Following a shot over the bar by Strachan, McKay was through one on one with the Burghead keeper but his shot was also just over the bar in 8 minutes.

Five minutes later Strachan had a shot saved and turned round the post for a corner.

McKay then had an excellent header from a corner in 19 minutes only to see his attempt go just wide of the Burghead goal.

Colony had another couple of chances but Burghead had a good opportunity to take the lead when their striker was through with only Farquhar to beat, however the Colony keeper made a great save.

At the other end Cairns made a powerful run down the right wing and his low cross was superbly turned into the net by Stuart McKAY to give Colony a one goal lead in 35 minutes.

Burghead came back with an excellent shot a minute later which Farquhar saved superbly and minutes later he repeated the feat as Burghead pressed for an equaliser.

Roddie then made a good run and chipped the Burghead keeper only to see his strike come back off the post.

Colony Park scored at the start of the second half when Jack STRACHAN picked up the ball on the right side of the box and beat the Burghead keeper with a shot at the near post.

From a corner on 56 minutes Morrison picked up the ball and hit a good shot which the Burghead keeper saved well.

Morrison then combined with McKay and Roddie with the latter’s shot going just wide of the post.

On 67 minutes Reid replaced Douglas for Colony.

The Inverurie side continued to press through to the end of the match.

In 79 minutes a goalmouth scramble ended in Stachan’s shot being saved while a minute later he had another shot saved in similar circumstances.

The match ended with a 2-0 win for Colony but it was not enough to win their league cup group.

This Saturday Colony are at home to Sunnybank In the Dominos Pizza Cup.
