COLONY Park Ladies was formed just over six months ago, around the same time that the Juvenile outfit were also creating a new Junior Team.

The Colony Park FC chairman Dave Mitchell said, “The ladies have started the team slowly, trying to build in in an evolutionary way, beginning with regular training and small sided games amongst their numbers.

“We, as a club, have encompassed both genders since the millennium when we ceased to be just a Boys Club. We have a healthy Girls section, although we are always looking to recruit more, and hopefully in time this will help the Colony Ladies”

With the New Year comes a new push from Colony Ladies organiser Amanda Smith who highlighted the progress so far and plans for the future. She said, “We have been keeping the formation of the team low key but over the next 12 months will be looking to recruit new players, work on skills, fitness and understanding of the game.

“Our plan will be to arrange friendly games with other local ladies teams so we can get a sense of what we need to put in place going forward. Our ambition is to be in a position to join the ladies league in 2013 so we need to put the foundation work in this year and we definitely need to add to our numbers.

“We are looking for players of all abilities, players must be over 16 years of age - our current players range from 17 to 44 - so we don’t see the upper age as a barrier!. We need to set ourselves some targets, particularly around fitness, and on the suggestion of one of our members we have signed up as a team for the Specsavers Run Garioch 2012.

“We will be putting in group entries for both 5k and 10k Event races to try and promote the team and also to raise funds for CLIC Sargent and Grampian Leukaemia Research. We will be training for this event as part of our Winter Training held every Wednesday evening from 7.15pm to 8.30pm on the Astro Turf at Garioch Sports Centre, Inverurie.”
