Ellon United bounced back from their disappointing performance against Stonehaven with a convincing 4–1 win over FC Stoneywood at the Meadows on Saturday.

United must have been well warned after their shocking start against Hive and they began on the front foot keeping Goodbrand busy early
on but the closest they came was a shot from Kris Benzie which the keeper held confidently.

Ellon made the breakthrough midway through the first half with Aiden Greig drilling the ball under the keeper.

United continued to have the upper hand for most of the half without forcing a second and had to be content with taking their slender lead into the interval.

Ellon threatened again after the break but were unable to give themselves the cushion they needed as there was always the chance that the visitors might make them pay.

So it proved when United were completely caught on the counter in the 52nd minute.

The home side had moved clear but had strayed offside and Goodbrand’s long kick up the field was collected by Wilson who ran on to shoot home from a narrow angle.

United were unable to finish off a number of promising cross balls before regaining the lead in the 60th minute when Benzie bulleted home a header from Scott McLeod’s long throw.

Greig got on the end of another cross but his volley flew high.

Ellon’s first change saw Tito Silva replace Lenny Johnson and four minutes later the move paid off when Greig laid the ball back to Chris Craib whose telling cross was headed back across keeper Goodbrand by the striker into the opposite corner.

The home side increased their advantage when Martin Crisp moved forward to head home a Greig corner.

United then introduced Dean McDonald for Greig
and Neil Law for Callum Tremaine as they saw out
the time remaining and complete a positive all round
display.

United get a break from league duty this Saturday and face a completely new challenge when they meet Spey Valley for the first time in a home first round tie in the Dominos Pizza North Regional Cup. Kick-off is 2pm.

Meanwhile, the winning numbers in United’s Lucky Six Draw were 1, 6, 10, 11, 14 and 18 and no-one picked the full set.

Due to holidays and work commitments the next draw will be on Sunday, October 4 when the jackpot will be £1,150 and the selection 6 from 18. The consolation prize winner was Sivy.
