Freeze-up hits Highland League fixtures

Formartine United’s home match against Brora Rangers was one of six league fixtures which fell victim to the weather on Saturday.

Despite the North Lodge Park playing surface having been spiked and rolled during the week, extreme overnight frost on Thursday and Friday left areas of the pitch frozen.

United’s next game is away to Lossiemouth on Saturday.

The other games which were called off on Saturday were Cove Rangers v Strathspey Thistle, Huntly v Forres Mechanics, Inverurie Locos v Lossiemouth, Keith v Nairn County and Turriff United v Fort William.

Several junior games were also postponed, including Ellon United’s meeting with Inverness City at Bught Park.

Ellon are at home to in-form Banks o’ Dee on Saturday. Kick-off is 1.30pm.

In the Highland League games which did go ahead Fraserburgh and Wick Academy drew 2-2 in an incident-packed match at Bellslea.

Wick opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Willie West fired the equaliser in the 34th minute.

The visitors regained the lead in the 51st minute but the Broch grabbed an equaliser from the penalty spot nine minutes from time the awarding of which led to Wick keeper McCarthy being sent off for a second bookable offence.

Elsewhere, Deveronvale drew 3-3 at home to Clach while Buckie Thistle claimed the three points with the only goal of the game against struggling Rothes at Victoria Park.
