A WET Bellslea Stadium, Fraserburgh was the venue for a local derby as Inverurie Academy and Meldrum Academy contested the final of the Under 15 Council Cup.
In a fairly even contest, Inverurie took the lead in the second minute with Paul GEE scoring an angled drive from just inside the box. Inverurie tried to take advantage of the early goal but some resolute defending and poor finishing kept the scoreline at 1-0.
As the match progressed Meldrum started to play the more composed football without threatening in the danger areas. With a few minutes left in the first half Meldrum had their best opportunity to level the score when Smart was one on one with Douglas in the Inverurie goal and as he narrowed the angle the keeper appeared to get a foot to the shot which went wide of the post.
Inverurie started the brighter in the second period and created a few opportunities but again poor finishing let them down. Meldrum equalised in somewhat confused circumstances when the referee, after several minutes play, noticed the assistant referees flag. After discussion Meldrum were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, the keeper adjudged to have carried the ball out of the box when kicking from hand. Kyle SUTHERLAND seized the opportunity and curled the free kick inside the keepers left hand post.
The goal seemed to galvanise Inverurie and they went on to create several chances and after a catalogue of errors in the six yard box Greg CENTER, cool under pressure, calmly side footed the ball past the hands of the diving keeper to give Inverurie a 2-1 victory and the cup.
