It was a first away League defeat for Inverurie Locos at Clachnacuddin, and they missed the chance to go back to the top of the table on a day champions Brora were held by Cove in the battle of the Rangers.

For Clach it was very much a shock win in smash and grab fashion, coming only seven days after their heavy Scottish Cup home defeat by Hurlford Utd who will play Locos on Saturday,
October 4.

The first half severely lacked cohesion with injury hit Locos missing players from key positions,
but dominating the proceedings, however neither side recorded a shot on
target.

In 7 minutes David Ross cut in from the right, and saw his left foot shot deflected off Clach skipper Gordon Morrison for a corner, Daniel McLennan and Blair Lawrie posing threats at the other end.

The nearest to a goal was a flicked Martin Bavidge header from a Marc Young
long throw

The visitors livened up immediately after the restart, John Campbell having to acrobatically tip a Ross header over the top, captain Neil McLean then seeing a rising effort go just over the top and blocking a close range effort from Dean Donaldson on his line.

He then dived to his right to turn away a curling free kick by
John Maitland.

However the Merkinchers were growing in confidence amazingly being still level at 0-0. And against the run of play, Andy Reid had to make a great save on his line
from Martin Callum, the home contingent
claiming a goal.

Then Reid parried a Daniel McLennan effort, Ian Penwright’s rebound cleared off the line by Ross Still.

With only two minutes remaining PENWRIGHT became the home hero with a goal similar to Paul Gascoigne’s goal for England against Scotland in 1996. His trickery foxed defenders Gordon Forsyth and Ryan Broadhurst before keeping his composure to drive on and beat Reid.

There was no way back for the Red and Blacks who could have lost a second goal had Martin Laing kept his composure.

But they will class themselves as unfortunate not to get a penalty when
36 year old trialist substitute, former Cove Rangers legend Martin
Johnston, on for Martin Bavidge, was held back in the box.
