LAST weekend Stuart McWatt took seven of his Garioch Judo charges to St Helens for the North West Age Banded Championship and returned with five medals after some great performances from the youngsters.
Murray Wood took bronze in the Pre-Cadet Under 38Kg section having five fights along the way . Olivia Reid and James Littler also took bronze medals in their categories, with James losing out to Garioch team Mate Stuart McWatt in the semi-final.
Nordin Adrif won his first gold in the the Cadet Under 38kg level, and in the Under 66 kg category Stuart McWatt overcame British Champion George Collum to take Gold.
After this contest Stuart McWatt improved his rankings and is now leading in the British points ranking. Young Stuart was delighted with the weekends results and said, “This was a boost ahead of next weeks European Cup event which takes place in Croatia and I’m hoping I can perform well enough to get some European ranking points.
“My programme is geared towards the European Championships in Tallin in June but a place there will depend on my results and the selectors choices.”
His father and Head Coach Suart McWatt (Senior) praised all the youngsters efforts saying, “Its a six to seven hour car journey to St Helens but it didn’t seem to affect performances. All the Judo players did as well as, and in some instances better than, expected.
“The next main competition is coming up at Sportif In Edinburgh next month and hopefully we will see more progress. Our new Clubs in Alford and Mintlaw have been a great success and in just under two months we have around 40 regulars at each venue.
“I have no doubt we will soon see some of these youngsters competing at a national level. Young Stuart did well to overcome George in the final despite being a year younger than the British Champion and has managed to overtake him in the rankings which is good and is in part attributable to working with some International Judo players at Ratho in Edinburgh.”
