Girls make the grade

FOUR gymnasts from Garioch Gymnastics Club, based at the Garioch Community Centre in Inverurie, were recently successful in gaining a place in Scottish National squads. Selection into the squads was based on excellent competition results from 2011.

Erin Fraser (9), from Inverurie, gained a place in the National Development Squad while Izzy Tolometti (12), from Alford, Alix Still (11), from Kemnay and Leandra Gray (9) from Turriff were picked for the National Preparation Squad. All girls will train between once or twice a month in Edinburgh with the National squad coaches and their own elite coaches from Garioch , Janine Robertson, Emily Bull, Cathy Osborne and Jenny Swan.

Garioch remains the only Women’s gymnastics club in the North of Scotland with gymnasts represented in the National squad. This is made all the more astounding, as they will soon be the only club left in Scotland working at National level without their own full time training facility.

Garioch Gymnastics club are trying to secure their own building, which can be permanently set up as a gymnastics facility. With the amount of children currently taking part in gymnastics in and around Inverurie, the waiting list the club holds and with the ongoing successes of the competitive gymnasts, the club desperately need a permanent facility to maintain and build on these successes and allow more children to take part in the sport at all levels. If anyone can help with trying to secure a building, or with sponsor ship for the National Squad Girls please contact Janine Robertson on (01467) 628108.

Garioch Gymnastics runs an action packed programme which includes recreational gymnastics classes for boys and girls aged 4+ and freestyle / adult gymnastics class for aged 15+. In these classes children are taught the basic gymnastic skills, body awareness, coordination, strength, flexibility, balance and power in a fun and structured environment. The children get the opportunity each term to achieve their next GYMSTAR award, Garioch Gymnastics very own award scheme where children are awarded a certificate and medal on passing.

Garioch Gymnastics Club has achieved Enhanced Accreditation with Aberdeenshire Councils Club Cap scheme. Aberdeenshire Council recognise Garioch Gymnastics as a safe, friendly and developing club and is the only gymnastics club in Grampian to achieve this accreditation.

The Club’s gym is a fully equipped gymnastics hall including: large floor area, bouncy floor tumble, Trampette, Vault Station, five Bar Stations, four Beam Stations and inflatable bouncy Air Floor.

All coaches progress through the British Gymnastics qualification system. All complete Child Protection training every three years (in accordance to National Governing Body rules). All coaches are Disclosure or PVG checked and many are First Aid qualified. There are two High Performance Coaches (Level 5); one Senior (Level 4); four Club (Level 3); eight Level 2 (the minimum qualification required by British Gymnastics to run a gymnastics class); thirteen Level 1, and nine helpers.
