Home win puts seasons outcome into Garioch’s own hands

Garioch RFC's match winning try scorer Martin McRobbie beats the last Wanders defender

Garioch RFC's match winning try scorer Martin McRobbie beats the last Wanders defender

AFTER the previous week’s superb performance in coming back from three trys behind to win 47-17 away at table top rivals Aberdeen University, a large crowd assembled on Saturday afternoon to watch Garioch RFC’s last home game of the regular league season against Aberdeen Wanderers.

The weather was grey and uncompromising, as was the rugby for the vast majority of an extremely close and tense match. Most of the game was played between the two 22 meter lines and very rarely did either team’s attacking prowess shine against some dogged defence. Indeed the first points did not come until the 33rd minute, when after scorning two previous kickable penalties to instead play for position in the corners, Stuart REAPER stepped up to put a sweetly hit penalty kick between the posts. With the pattern of the game continuing unchanged for the rest of the first half, the sides changed round at half time with the home side holding the slenderest of leads.

The game was slightly more open in the second half, but it wasn’t until half way through that the first real try scoring opportunity of the afternoon came along. A superb solo break by Martin McRobbie saw him thwarted just short of the line after slipping as he evaded the last defender. However MCROBBIE was not to be disappointed for long when soon after an almost identical break saw him slice through the Wanderers defence to score unopposed under the posts for the only try of the game. With the simple conversion kicked by Reaper and no incidents of note in the rest of the game, Garioch ran out winners by 10 points to nil.

In three weeks time GRFC travel to Aberdeenshire Seconds, before completing the regular season with an away fixture against Moray RFC the following week. Victories from both these games will guarantee them a place in the promotion play-offs no matter what their nearest rivals, Aberdeen University, do in their four remaining games.
