Two members from Ellon Bowling Club collected top awards for their efforts recently.

Mike Stephen and Ellen Bartlet received the Freedom of the Green awards at a ceremony held earlier this month.

The special occasion marked the first time in the 100 year club history that any members have received this honour.

Ellen and Mike said: “We would like to thank the committee for the honour of the Freedom of the Green, We really got a big surprise when we received the letter informing us that we had been awarded this honour.”

Ellen, 75, was brought up in Ellon where she spent most of her early years in Gordon Place near the bowling club. She realised that she had a natural talent after joining the club in 1966.

Success came one year later after she won the Ladies Singles title which she has gone on to win a further 15 times

Mike, 46, grew up near Methlick for 12 years before moving to Ellon. He joined the Outdoor Ellon Bowling Club in 1982.

In his first season he collected the club triples trophy along with Ellen and Jim McGhee.

Club President Leslie Milne added: “It gives me great pleasure to be associated with Ellen and Mike’s Freedom of the Green. They have represented Ellon at all levels and really achieved remarkable victories in competitive bowling way beyond most of our dreams. We wish them many more years of enjoyment on the bowling green.”
