Inverurie Don Valley were off the pace in all departments again as they subsided to a nine wicket defeat by Lahore Karahi at Kings College.
If you haven’t heard of Lahore Karahi they are the same team that played in Grade One last year as St Ronald second eleven. St Ronald club, whose first eleven also played in Grade One last year and were relegated, merged with Cults over the winter but shortly before the season began it was announced that the second eleven, now known as Lahore Karahi were going to continue to play in the Grade One slot as a new entity. Its hard to square this arrangement with the grades constitution but the management committee were satisfied.
The return of Hadden and Randell to the team strengthened the Inverurie batting on paper but once again Norval was the only batsman to settle at the crease and his 41 was very much a lone hand. The St Ronald opening bowlers were testing, but the main disappointment was that it was the change bowlers who took seven of the wickets with medium pace that really shouldn’t have done such damage on the artificial pitch.
Thirteen overs were left unused and Inverurie’s first objective must be to use the full 46 to give some sort of chance to apply pressure in the second innings. The three Lahore batsmen seen all played with little difficulty. Skipper Imran carried his bat for 43 not out and Inverurie’s only wicket, Zubair bowled by Norval, only brought Mauzam to the crease and he proceeded to blast 35 off 19 balls as Lahore passed their target at a gallop. Moore and Mitra both bowled well without reward and Inverurie stuck at it in the field but it was one way traffic.
Inverurie now prop up the rest of the table but the only slight possible saver is that their three defeats have come against top four sides. Next weeks opponents Banchory are the only other team without a win and Inverurie will need their A-side as the scene changes from beside the seaside to Deeside.
