Ellon retained their Caledonian Division 1 status after Garioch failed to beat Glenrothes at Inverurie on Saturday, writes Jack Nixon.
In the second of the Caley Division 1 play-off games, the Inverurie club fell to a late penalty after being generally the better of the two sides for much of the game.
The Fifers will now move up to the top Caley league, while the Inverurie side will remain in Caley 2 North after failing for the second consecutive season to gain promotion to the top flight of the local game.
A large Ellon contingent made the trip across to Inverurie for the game which was won 12-11 by Glenrothes.
Ellon captain Nicki Fraser said: “It’s a great relief to know the club will still be in Caley 1 next season.”
The season is now finished, all that now remains is for Ellon, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen Grammar to name their coaching teams for the next campaign.
There has been much speculation among North-east supporters in what has been a generally poor season for all three sides who were fighting relegation for most of their respective campaigns.
There has also been talk of a third professional side taking up residence in the area, though the better informed are not convinced such a move would be sustainable.
