Inverurie’s Stuart McWatt picked up his second European medal in the space of five weeks when he won bronze in Coimbra, Portugal last weekend.
The 16 year old Inverurie Academy pupil and lifelong Judo enthusiast had, in the second week in March, taken Gold in the Under 73 Kg category at the European Cadets in Zagreb, Croatia much to the delight, and surprise of his father and coach Stuart McWatt (senior), head of Garioch Judo. Stuart (senior) said “ The Gold in Zagreb was something of a surprise but Stuart’s been putting in a huge effort to kick on in European terms this year so has attended several European Cup meetings. He now knows the level at which he competes and he’s one of the younger ones in the Cadets so he would hope for continued success over the coming years.
“The Bronze in Coimbra last weekend just confirms he is up there with the best of the Europeans and justifies his selection in the GB Team. He is rapidly gaining experience at a European level and at Under 21 level he has taken Gold in the Scottish Open in January and the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast three weeks ago.”
With Highers looming ahead, Stuart will have to focus on exams for a few weeks and then take some time to consider his next move - not something that Judo players often have the time to do!
