Ythan CC rider Russell Craig produced the club’s road race performance of the year when he claimed eighth place at the Nick Hardy Memorial road race at Monikie near Dundee on Sunday, writes Malcolm Grant.

Craig recovered from a mechanical incident and chased back to the peloton with an effort that propelled him to the head of the race, a place he retained until the finish where he secured his top ten place behind race winner Chris Williamson (Deeside Thistle).

In Peebles, youth rider Calum Cooper finished third overall in the U14 category at the Peebles MTB stage race which consisted of a XC race, hill climb, downhill race and a dirt crit.

The event took place in wet conditions but with the cyclo cross season just around the corner the Peterhead youth is showing the form that has made him one of the strongest youths on the off-road circuit.

Aviemore was the location for the annual Cairngorm CC weekend of racing which featured three time trials and a handicap road race. The first time trial was an ascent of Cairngorm and Ythan’s Colin Duncan finished in 13th place behind winner Craig Wallace.

In the following time trials, a 14-mile effort around the roads near Loch Morlich and a 10-mile time trial, Duncan placed 14th and 15th respectively.

Also racing in the 10-mile time trial was Duncan’s teammate Karolyn Brown who finished second lady and the afternoon’s handicap road race saw her husband Robbie Brown also produce a good performance as he secured 13th place against a strong field of riders who had faced several laps around the Aviemore area.

This weekend will see the Ballater two-day stage race taking place on the roads around Royal Deeside, with the race consisting of three stages across the two days.
