17 DEGREES on Sunday and 16 the day before; unbelievable temperatures for this time of year was the reaction of fishers at Lochter Fishery. It was not only the temperature that was hotting up - angling too was red hot.
Many anglers had double figure bags and catches of eight and nine were the order of the day. Among the happy double figure squad were M Cordiner, J Breen, C Duncan, D Wood, T Daniels, E Mackay Snr, E Mackay Jnr, W Preston Jnr, and D Taylor. Achieving bags of over 20 were I Robertson and P Green. The majority of fish were returned to the water and a wide array of flies were used successfully with Damsel Nymphs, black and green Nomads and Diawl Bachs predominating.
On the events front at Lochter much is also stirring. The Troutmasters heat final is scheduled for Sunday, with the winner going to the National final at Grafham Water. A heat for the Airflo World Bank Masters will be held on March 25. The final at Elinor Trout Fishery will be covered by Sky TV - a chance for TV fame for a local angler!
Finally, the Lochter Summer League will be something special this year. First prize, generously sponsored by EM Diagnostics, is an amazing £1000. It will be a pairs competition but with a new format. Running from April to September pairs will fish a six hour session each month. Each angler keeps the two best fish of the session which are weighed in and capped at 5lbs per fish. In the Final Fish Off, the first two fish are kept and a credit of 3lbs awarded for each additional fish caught and returned. A set of rules will be issued on registration. Early entry is advised as the league will be popular. For information contact the fishery on (01651) 872787 or 872000.
