All ready for the Lourin Fair
Preparations are well under way for one of the North-east’s oldest events.
Old Rayne will host the Lourin Fair, which dates back around 500 years, on Saturday, August 18.
The large grassy park near the village hall will be transformed for the day for the popular traditional country fair.
From 11am until 5pm the show field will host a major programme of events and attractions catering for all ages, regardless of the weather.
Old Rayne Community Association chair Murray McIntosh said: “Lourin Fair is an excellent opportunity to spend the day in the countryside, meet and chat with enthusiasts and view some fantastic exhibits and animals presented in all their glory.
“Of the horse events, one is a competition and parade involving heavy Clydesdale horses and the other is the Upper Donside Riding Club In-Hand and Ridden Show.”
Mr McIntosh explained that there will be a blacksmith horse shoe demonstration and, more unusually, some Clydesdale choreography which is an impressive display set to music.
He added: “We try to ensure Lourin Fair continues to provide excellent value for money and while we welcome back some favourite crowdpullers again this year, we also try to offer something a little bit different each year.”
Other attractions include a tartan off road fun run organised by Garioch Lions, including a 7.5k and 2k course. A duck race will see hundreds of numbered plastic ducks racing along the River Ury with top cash prizes for first, second and last place. The fair will also have a raffle with major prizes.
Association treasurer Reinhilde van den Brande said: “The Old Rayne Community Association is a registered charity that supports our rural community, its clubs and associations and the upkeep of our village hall.
“As a principal fundraiser, Lourin Fair is an important event that helps bring our community together and shows off our beautiful village to its best advantage.”
Admission to the show field is £5 for adults, £3 for 12-18 year olds/concessions with under 12s free. Entry includes free car parking. More information, includiing competition entry forms, can be found at www.oldrayne.org.uk, or by emailing [email protected]
