Councillor Rob Merson said that the decision is a crucial matter for towns with a large rural hinterland, such as Ellon and District.

Mr Merson said: “Consultation demonstrated that 77 per cent of the people of Scotland were totally opposed to the privatisation of Royal Mail, more than any other part of the UK, yet the Westminster Government was determined to press ahead with the sell-off. The UK Government compounded their blunder with an underestimation of the share value which resulted in a ‘bargain basement sell-off’ estimated to have cost UK taxpayers somewhere in the region of a £billion.

“SNP MPs at Westminster have repeatedly asked why they set the shares at such a low rate – but have yet to receive a plausible explanation.

“Only as an independent nation can Scotland be assured of a mail service which meets the needs of our rural communities – and that is one which will be brought back into public ownership.”
