Parents of pupils at St Andrews School in Inverurie have been giving their feedback on what the school could look like if it is relocated to the new Inverurie Community Campus.
A drop-in session was held on Tuesday, August 30 for parents to view plans of how the school could look, speak to officers and give their feedback so it can be considered as the plans develop.
At this stage, the plans take the shape of a distinct setting within the wider community campus setting, with a separate school entrance and classrooms, sensory rooms, therapy suites and changing places toilets.
Several outdoor play areas would also be created, some which would be for the pupils of St Andrews only and some which could be shared with other pupils.
The outdoor areas would include a sensory garden as well as play equipment such as a basket swing, climbing unit and accessible roundabout, which could be used by children in wheelchairs.
Feedback from parents so far has been positive and the council continues to work with them to explore any concerns and answer questions.
Director of Education & Children’s Services, Maria Walker, explained the process: “It’s important to stress that these are by no means the final plans for St Andrews School or the new campus as a whole.
“We are still gathering feedback from parents and these proposals, including whether the school is relocated, are not set in stone and will develop over time.
“It’s important that the new facility caters for a wide spectrum of needs so there is a fine balance to be struck for the school as part of a campus setting.
“We want to enhance its unique identity and make sure pupils have their own individual space and kind of environment they need to thrive in while at the same time promoting access and opportunities with their peers.”
The council will now continue to work with parents and stakeholders on the current proposals, with opportunities for further discussion about the school over the coming months.
Engagement sessions with parents of pupils at Inverurie Academy and other relevant stakeholders are being organised to take place over the coming months so they are kept up-to-date as well on developments with the new campus.
Work on the new Inverurie Community Campus is expected to begin in early 2018 with the facilities opening to pupils and the public in mid-2020.
