Another successful Garioch Fiddlers Rally
The Garioch Fiddlers held another successful Fiddlers’ Rally in Inverurie Town Hall on Saturday night (April 19).
Sixty players, including guests from other societies, provided a programme of traditional Scottish music with tunes from other countries to spice things up. Once more some of the music was written and arranged by members of the Garioch Fiddlers.
Colin Dempster assisted by Andrew Bowie conducted the programme. Neil Hehir was the leader of the orchestra for the evening and his dad, Graeme, kept everyone on track as stage manager. Anne Watt provided accompaniment on the piano. Guest players came from Aberdeen, Banchory, Macduff, Inverness, and Strathbogie.
The Guest Artist for the night was Charlie Abel who enthralled the audience with a wide range of music played on his hand-made Italian Vignoni Accordion. Charlie also carried everyone along with his lively singing.
Dan Greavey, who acted as Compere for the evening, added a touch of sophistication to the proceedings as he told stories and sang beautifully in a way which would have graced any theatre in the West End of London.
The novelty set commemorated the start of World War One. Lovely giant Poppies were produced which, along with petals cascading from the roof, added to the poignant atmosphere stirred up by the music.
Once more everyone marvelled at the competence and skills shown by the Junior Orchestra. Full credit must go to Nicola Tierney who, with the help of other members of the society, prepares and conducts the youngsters every week. Earlier in the programme young Finlay Morse, who looked resplendent in his highland dress, was presented by this year’s adjudicator Barbara Anderson with the Alex Garden Memorial Trophy which is competed for by members of the junior orchestra who are under fifteen years of age and the Bert Morgan Cup for playing the best slow air at the Juniors’ competition. Morna Holmes received the Bill Johnston Memorial Trophy for the overall Young Fiddler of the Year. Morna delighted us all by playing her winning selection with style and feeling. Everyone worked hard to make the evening a great success and they were all well rewarded.
