An Ellon man is training for a 1,000-mile cycle over 11 days despite his family saying he is “off his rocker”.

Bruce Ferguson, 48, is gearing up for the gruelling pedal marathon around Scotlandin April to raise funds for NET Patient Foundation who support his sister.

Last year Bruce’s sister, Jill aged 42 was diagnosed with a Neuroendocrine cancer.

Bruce, Aberdeen Grain managing director, told the Times: “Cancer affects all families and everyone has to do their bit - that’s my drive.

“I want to raise awareness and give the clinic funds, allow them to develop treatments and support the family as there is no form of treatment here.”

Every two months Jill has to travel from her home in Scone to London where she receives radiotherapy treatment. Bruce added: “Jill is very positive, she keeps strong and gets through week by week.”

The intensive training which started in November, sees Bruce cycle 300km and run 30km a week in preparation for his challenge ahead.

By March he will pedal up to 400km a week.

He said: “I have to - to cycle 100-120 km a day in some of the hilliest terrains you need to be extra strong.”

Bruce, who is also Managing Director of Angus Cereals, and has a wider remit as General Manager of Openfield in Scotland says he has always had a decent level of fitness under his belt. He has been the top veteran in the Ythan Challenge, raised funds for UCAN as well as finding time to take part in the Great North Run.

Bruce said: “I have received tremendous support so far. One or two people will be joining me on parts of the route.

“My family think I’m daft and off my rocker, but hopefully I will do them proud.”

Bruce has raised £3,000 so far of the £5,000 target he is hoping to make.
