Ellon folk invited to ‘take the plunge’

Ellon Rotarians are urging the local community to ‘take the plunge’ later month.

The local Rotary club is inviting people of all ages to rally round on Sunday, November 16, for a Swimarathon.

The event will be held once again at the town’s community pool.

Swimarathon is organised by Rotarians globally to support Rotary’s International charity, End Polio Now.

The campaign is now edging closer to seeing the total eradication of polio and the organisation is making a final push to end the most debilitating of diseases.

Ellon Rotarians raised more than £2000 from their first Swimarathon fundraiser.

Spokesman Doug Winchester said: “The club is hopeful that this figure can be overtaken and so it is encouraging children and adults to take part in the fun.

“The club wants the participants to set a world record for the maximum number of swimmers taking part in this worldwide event and asks that they swim at least two lengths of the Ellon pool.”

If anyone would like to swim more than two lengths, then all they need to do is inform the organisers when registering.

Details can be found at swimarathon@ellon.org.uk or contact 08452260319.

The organisers are suggesting minimum sponsorship of £20 per adult and £10 per child.

Rotary Foundation, which is Rotary’s charity, will double the amount raised and the Bill Gates Foundation will double this figure again.

Mr Winchester added: “Rotary thanks everyone who has participated in this amazing event in the past and continues to thank everyone who is intending registering this year.”
