Ellon paths saga ends as councillors agree adoption

Paths in Ellon’s Bredero estate and in Meiklemill have been adopted by Formartine Area Committee.

Councillor Gillian Owen reported them to the council a couple of years ago due to their poor state.

She said: “The problem with the path between Bredero Drive and Auchmore Road seemed to be that there was no record of the path ever having been adopted by the council or the previous Gordon District Council hence the legal ownership is in some doubt. “Officers did try to establish ownership but were unable to find out. The council took the view that they needed to bring it up to standard but it was reopened last summer.”

“Another case of paths not being adopted was in and around Swan Road in Meiklemill. Again these paths have both been in existence for over 35 years and it just looks like the developer did not seek adoption from the council.”

Adoptions and inspections of new housing or infrastructure developments are now more rigorous.

Councillor Owen added: “Council policy was now to adopt when all schemes were at the correct standard. Developers would have to bring all paths, roads and other infrastructure up to standard before the council would take over the responsibility, meaning the cost of meeting such sub-standard work in new estates would not fall on us the taxpayer.”
