AN ex-Inverurie Academy pupil, Joanne Jeffreys, won the Durham Regatta 2011 on Saturday, (June 11) as part of the Liverpool University Boat Club.
Joanne (19), who also attended Strathburn Primary School, and is an ex-Colony Park Girls player and coach; has just completed her second year at the University of Liverpool studying for a Masters in Geology and Physical Geography.
She started rowing September 2010, and is currently storming through the sport as the only novice woman in the senior boat. Instead of returning home to Inverurie for the Summer after her exams, she has stayed in Liverpool to train with the club everyday for Summer Regattas.
Durham Regatta is commonly referred to as “The Henley of the North”, and LUBC competed in the Women’s Eights, and two Fours categories.
Joanne sat at the bow seat in both the Eight and one Four. The LUBC women’s eight crew progressed through the knockout stages beating home crews such as St Cuthbert; Leeds University; and finally Hatfield College in the final, where they finished a boat length and a half in front.
The girls won a tankard each, and a prestigious British Rowing Point, which means that they now have to compete at an Intermediate Level category.
