Fundraising ensures Inverurie gets Christmas Lights this year

Thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of Inverurie Events, an almost full complement of lights will adorn Inverurie town centre this festive season.

After last year’s nominal five lights, Inverurie Events now reports 33 Christmas sponsors to date, and with only 35 lamp posts, two are still on offer. £400 will secure sponsorship for a period of ten years which will include the sponsor’s sign around the lamp post.

But, more cash is being sought from local business. Inverurie Events needs to raise £650 for a Christmas tree and about £1,000 for fireworks.

Local Councillor and Inverurie Events Chairman, Hamish Vernal said: “We’ve come a long way with the lights and we are very pleased with that. We are very confident that we will reach our target of 35, but now we’d like an organisation or business to come forward to sponsor the tree and the firework display to make Inverurie a truly spectacular winter wonderland.”

Behind the scenes, Inverurie Events is getting ready for the St Andrew’s Day parade and Christmas Light switch-on which will take place on Sunday, November 25, with all proceeds going to the Christmas Lights fund.

In the square, stalls, kindly on loan from the Farmers Market, will be set up and on the day there will be live music, food and entertainment, and a Firework Display from the roof of the Town Hall as well as the parade itself.

In anticipation of a good turnout, the event starts officially at 1pm and ends after the Firework display at approximately 5.30pm.

Inverurie Events has announced that former Girl Guide, Claire Jamieson, who is an Event Management student at RGU, will be joining them. As part of her course, Claire must complete 100 hours of work within a community group. Secretary of Inverurie Events, Neil Baillie said: “We are absolutely delighted that she has chosen Inverurie Events and I would like to take this opportunity in welcoming her to the team. She will be working closely with the committee.

“Claire used to take part in the parade and once again we want to publicise the local youth groups in the area. We hope it will promote a sense of pride and interest for our children in the community and country.”
