The special event was held on Thursday, November 10 in the Day Care Centre on Port Road in Inverurie.

Group chairperson, Ishbel Imrie, said: “The committee and I were delighted to see so many volunteers, ex volunteers and recipients attend to help celebrate our 25 year anniversary, and a very warm welcome was extended to all.”

Back in 1989 a partially sighted lady visited John Hughes optician in Inverurie and during their chat she asked about local news.

John asked her if she got the Talking Newspaper (TN) but there was no local TN available then.

He rectified this situation and so The Inverurie and District TN began.

Gradually local volunteers came forward and donations from local bodies enabled the group to buy the necessary equipment and the first tapes were posted out in November 1991.

Ishbel added: “A good few changes have occurred since with several moves of premises and we are now housed in the Day Care Centre, Inverurie.

“Last year we moved over to a digital method of recording and we so enjoyed visiting and meeting all our recipients when we delivered the speaker boxes. The digital system is easier for us to use and we hope that our listeners enjoy our recordings.

“We are so grateful to all the organisations who have donated money to us over the years and to the Day Care Centre for accommodating us, all of which keeps us going.

“One issue we have, however, is declining numbers of recipients. We once had over 100 cassette tapes going out and now we have less than 30 memory sticks being posted weekly.

“Thank you to all who have contributed to the success of our Talking Newspaper. Without the support of our enthusiastic volunteers there would be no Garioch Gossip.

“The room was buzzing with chat as new friendships were made and old acquaintances reunited. We also enjoyed a lovely cake made by Vera Walker and some entertainment was provided - Vera sang for us too.

“We finished off the evening with a wee sketch from myself and Muriel Gration (Team C) otherwise known as Eadie and Ethel, a couple of cleaning wifies.

“All in all we had thoroughly enjoyable evening.”
