Kemnay Academy pupils once again are gearing up for the Aberdeen Cyrenians Sleepout. The event will take place at Transition Extreme, Links Road, Aberdeen, from 8pm Saturday, March 3 until 7am, Sunday March 4.
The sleepout has become a firm tradition at the Academy, which is coordinated by depute, Phil Gaiter. He said: “The pupils are already gathering cardboard. They have approached the janitor and are targeting local shops. The boxes have to be flat packed because they are difficult to transport on buses.”
The demand from pupils is increasing year by year. Phil explained: “Last year we had 40 but this year 45 to 50 will be taking part.
“I think it’s great that pupils are appreciating the issue and want to do something to help the homeless. I would say that almost everyone that took part last year, will do it again in 2012. I have pupils who have done it every year since the first year but the Cyrenians have changed the rules now and only S3 upwards can do it now. Luckily none of the pupils who have done it before will be excluded because of this new rule.”
At the event pupils can choose to sleep outside or under cover, but Phil prepares the pupils in the hope that they will choose to sleep outside. He said: “We have a pre-meeting and talk about the issues and we encourage them to choose to sleep outside so that they get as realistic an experience as possible. Last year two-thirds of the crew slept outside.
“There is a huge buzz around it already, people are recounting stories from last year and are generally very excited.”
