Mitchells of Inverurie scooped up an award for a successful Rural Family Business (small/medium) last week.

The grocers shop, deli and tearoom won the title at The Herald Scottish Family Business Awards held in Glasgow on Wednesday, December 2.

These awards are held in association with Business Gateway and recognise and reward family businesses of all sizes and all sectors in Scotland.

Mitchells, which is also commonly known as The Dairy, was one of the two winners in the Rural Family Business (small/medium) awards category.

The second winner was MDive Ltd who are based in the Isle of Mull.

Mitchells’ category was supported by the Supplier Development Programme.

Mitchells was founded in 1928 by Elijah and Agnes Mitchell.

The company is now run as a partnership between the grandson of Elijah and Agnes, Patrick Mitchell, his daughter Judy and son-in-law Keith Whyte.

Keith and his wife Judy collected Mitchells’ award at the ceremony last week.

Keith said: “We were thrilled to be shortlisted for this prestigious award and to be a winner amongst so many worthy contenders is an honour”.

Mitchells has previously won a range of awards including winning the Health Promoting Retailer of the Year and Sustainable Retailer of the Year at the 2014 Scottish Grocer Awards and Independent Retailer of the Year at the Grampian Food Forum Innovation Awards 2013.

Judy added: “This award reflects the efforts of the entire team here at Mitchells as well as the valued loyalty of our fantastic customers and suppliers who continue to support our family business particularly during the challenging economic times we all face.

“Inverurie town centre prides itself on the variety of independently owned shops and we are immensely proud to be part of that wider ‘family’ community.”
