Oldmldrum Rotary to help the Philippines

Oldmeldrum Rotary Club have decided to play their part in helping those involved in the Philippines crisis by buying vital basic survival equipment to assist in the world-wide aid effort through the ShelterBox charity.

Earlier this month, Typhoon Haiyan swept through most of South East Asia, leaving thousands of people dead or missing and thousands more without a home, and with no access to basic facilities.

In response to the crisis, The Oldmeldrum Rotary Club have bought a Shelterbox, as a result of the club’s fundraising.

A club member has went one step further and bought another two boxes.

Each Shelterbox has a tent big enough for a large family, with a multi-fuel stove, water purification equipment, blankets and little gifts for children such as colouring books, crayons and pens.

ShelterBox Director of Fundraising and Communications, Becky Maynard, said:

“We are working directly with Rotarians in the Philippines and we have Rotarian Response Team members on the ground. The partnership between ShelterBox and the global Rotary family really demonstrates how, through service and support, we can make a real difference to people in their greatest hour of need.”

Oldmeldrum Rotary Club President, Richard Thomson, said: “No-one could fail to have been moved by the scenes of devastation from the Philipines. In the aftermath of humanitarian disasters around the world, Shelterbox is there to restore dignity and to help people rebuild their lives.

“We are very pleased, thanks to the generosity of our members and the wider community, to be able to support Shelterbox in their activities wherever they are needed.”
