The SNP Candidate for the Inverurie & District by-election has added his voice to calls for the dualling of the A96 around Inverurie to move east.

The Scottish Government has put in place a commitment to dual the remaining 86 miles of single carriageway on the A96 between Inverness and Aberdeen by 2030.

With the new A96 needing to depart from the existing alignment to go around Inverurie, Mr Baillie has called for Transport Scotland to consider calls for the road to go to the east and north.

He said: “Most of the delays on the road take place between Oldmeldrum and Aberdeen and that there is almost enough traffic on this section of the road to justify a dual carriageway already.

“Given the level of congestion on this route at peak times, it makes sense for any new A96 alignment to keep well away from the historic Bennachie landscape and to instead tackle two of Aberdeenshire’s major road requirements at once.

“I will be writing to Transport Scotland to make the case for this strategic alignment of the new A96 which can protect our natural heritage, and benefit Inverurie as well as all the towns along the A947.”
