Meldrum vet gears up for London Marathon
An Oldmeldrum vet is putting the finishing touches to preparations for the London Marathon.
Andy Mertin will be taking part in the event later this month to raise funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Andy, 35, is assistant vet at Meadows Veterinary Centre in Oldmeldrum.
He graduated in 2006 at the Free University of Berlin and has been working in the UK as a mixed veterinary surgeon since 2008.
He started running marathons in 2002 and this year will be his eighth event. Andy has taken part in marathons in Cologne, Berlin (five times) and London in 2012, also for the guide dogs charity.
He said: “Since starting work in the UK I have come across quite a few guide dogs in training as patients, or as working dogs for blind or partially blind.
“For partially blind or blind people these dogs are their eyes to the world and irreplaceable.
“The work this charity does from breeding, training, supporting to education is priceless and I am glad to help.”
Andy has been busily fund-raising over the last few weeks. A bingo night with raffle held recently in Oldmeldrum’s Royal British Legion raised £1185.
He has a target figure of £2000 and is hopeful of exceeding it.
