Inverurie has been recognised by Keep Scotland Beautiful as an ‘Outstanding Community’ after Inverurie Environmental Improvement Group (IEI) entered the town in the It’s Your Neighbourhood Initiative.

The town was assessed under the three themes of Community Participation, Environmental Responsibility and Gardening Achievement and was awarded 95 points out of 100 by the assessor.

Chairperson John Glover said: “The IEI Committee are delighted that the efforts of all those involved in improving the quality of the environment in Inverurie and enhancing the appearance of the Town Centre has been recognised by Keep Scotland Beautiful.”

IEI will be presented with the ‘2016 It’s Your Neighbourhood Award of Level 5: Outstanding‘ on October 26 in Stirling.

The IEI Group works to encourage and promote horticultural awareness, interest and activities in the town centre, community and schools.

IEI also works in partnership with the business community, social enterprises, sheltered housing, voluntary community groups, and the local authority to create an environmentally friendly town, to enhance the appearance of the town with planters and hanging baskets and to improve the quality of parks and other public open spaces.

IEI would like to thank the shops and businesses who sponsor the hanging baskets and planters; Aberdeenshire Council for providing the summer bedding plants; Pitscurry Project service users; IEI committee members, their families and friends along with the Inverurie Men’s Shed volunteers; Inverurie Rotary; Grampian Opportunities and Comraich.

The group manages all the colourful hanging baskets, planters and the Town Hall window troughs with summer bedding plants throughout the Town Centre and would like to enter ‘Scotland in Bloom’ next year, contact John on 07753 818397 or j.m.glover@talk21.com if you would like to help out.

The Inverurie Best Garden Competition awards will be presented in the Wyness Hall on September 3 at 12 noon.
