It is thought that over 200 shoeboxes were collected as a result of Ellon Rotary’s Shoebox Appeal.

The club called for members of the public to fill a shoebox with ordinary household items and gifts which would be sent on to orphanages and old folks homes.

The final count is to be confirmed but the rotary believe that over 200 boxes were collected and delivered to Dyce Carriers ready for delivery to Eastern Europe last week.

Rotary member Audrey Gartly said: “The response has been terrific and on behalf of Ellon Rotary Club I would like to thank schools, groups and individuals for their contributions.”

Members visited various schools throughout Formartine including Foveran, Newburgh and Auchterellon explaining the appeal in more detail.

P6F and P6L at Auchterellon School would like to say an enormous “thank you” to all parents and carers for all the items donated for the appeal.

The school had originally planned to fill 40 boxes, but both of the P6 classes spent most of Thursday, November 20 filling 80 boxes!

Working in pairs the pupils filled a girl’s or boy’s box, decorated the boxes and created a Christmas card with a Romanian festive greeting inside.

Pupils Aidan and Finn explained: “We all thought carefully about how happy we wanted the Children in Romania to be when they opened our boxes.

“To do that we carefully made Christmas cards with a Romanian message in each one and decorated the boxes as Christmassy as possible so that the children would be as happy as us on Christmas day.”
