TRAGEDY struck at the annual Specsavers Run Garioch event on Sunday, as local man Mark Sharp of Port Elphinstone collapsed nearing the end of the 10k race.
Mark was treated at the scene by St Andrew’s Ambulance members, who were in attendance at the event and by paramedics, but tragically later died in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Mark leaves a wife, Katrina, and two children.
Run Garioch committee chairman Frank Mathers told the Herald: “It is such an unfortunate and tragic incident.
“Mark collapsed as he was finishing the 10k run and despite the valiant efforts of the St Andrew’s Ambulance members and the regular paramedics, sadly we found out that he had died in hospital.
“I understand that he taken part in the event before. At the present time everybody’s thoughts and condolences are with Katrina and their family.
“We will support them in anyway we possibly can at this difficult time.”
Mr Mathers said: “Part of the reason we are now in our sixth year is to try and stimulate interest in a healthy lifestyle and participating in sport for all in the Garioch and surrounding area, whether its for fun, fitness or fame. In a few years the event has grown with so many people participating, and what happened on Sunday is such a tragedy.”
