Ellon make progress in Grill League Cup

Ellon United progressed to the knock-out stages of the Grill League Cup with a 3-0 win at Grantown on Saturday.

It followed the disappointment of losing 3-2 at home to neighbours Cruden Bay in the league last Tuesday night when they conceded a controversial last-minute penalty.

Saturday’s results left Ellon with a two-point advantage over Hall Russell United and Grantown and they now face Deveronside at The Meadows on Saturday, September 6.

United were once again forced into wholesale changes with Shaun Robertson stepping back into a central defensive role alongside Chris Allsop.

Ellon played down the slope in the first half in which the exchanges were relatively even with neither keeper unduly tested until the 35th minute when United forced a corner.

Aiden Greig’s cross was cleared only as far as Neil Erskine lurking on the edge of the box and his first-time drive flew into the net to give United the edge at the interval.

The visitors looked far more threatening playing up the slope with their pace causing Grantown all sorts of problems, but Ellon were unable to cash in, leaving the game on a knife edge as a draw would suit the home side.

Ellon conceded a dangerous free kick just outside their box in the 82nd minute, but John Calder in the United goal managed to tip the shot over for a corner which was cleared.

United sealed the victory in the 90th minute when good harrying resulted in Grant Thomson gaining possession and he fed the ball to Dev Kennedy-Colbert who outstri[pped the defence and whipped over a low cross which was turned in by Greig.

Four minutes into stoppage time, Lewis Macaulay’s through ball split the Grantown defence and Kennedy-Colbert beat the keeper to it, only to be pulled down in the box. The United striker dusted himself down and stepped up to slot home from the spot.

Ellon United: Calder, Scully, Craib, Thomson, Allsop, Robertson, Kennedy-Colbert, Macaulay, Erskine, Tremaine, Greig, Anderson.

United are again on new ground when they visit Spain Park to meet Banks o’ Dee under the lights on Friday. The match kicks off at 7.45pm.
