Inverurie Academy’s youngest and oldest sides were in action last Friday evening in the Soccer World Cup Finals at Ellon.
Inverurie Academy Seniors faced Aboyne in a Cup final match that had plenty of action but couldn’t match the youngsters for goals.
It was a somewhat fraught performance from both teams with Aboyne looking the hungrier side and there was a few hefty challenges and some yellow cards shown in a competitive match.
Morgan Cook looked assured behind a solid Inverurie defence and in attack they thought they had taken the lead when the ball appeared to have crossed the line following a corner mishandling by the keeper.
However, the referee wasn’t in a position to award despite multiple appeals.
The Aboyne keeper then had another let-off when an effort from Mackie went off the post rolled along the line and just scraped past the far post.
With 46 minutes on the clock the Deeside team were awarded a penalty which saw them take the lead going in at the break.
Inverurie had a frustrating second half unable to pierce the Aboyne defence and somewhat against the run of play lost a second goal 15 minutes into the second half.
That seemed to spur Inverurie into action and they pulled a goal back when a corner from Mikey Watson saw Mikey Donaldson time his jump best and steered a header past the keeper to give them some hope.
Despite more attacks Inverurie never looked like equalising and in the dying minutes Aboyne sealed the game with a simple third goal.
