It was much needed and thoroughly well deserved, full points and a clean sheet for Inverurie Locos.
Locos had lost their previous two games, both at Harlaw Park, conceding eight goals in the process against Hurlford and Cove, so this victory works them back into the leading pack. For the Vale a miserable home managerial debut for Ally MacLeod, ex Locos coach Craig Stratton and Mark Chisholm.
Both sides have been riddled by injuries in recent weeks but you have to get on with it and wait for things to get better on that front, after all it’s a squad game.
Locos in their yellow away shirts started the much brighter of the two sides and took the lead with only ten minutes on the clock. David Ross beat Kyle Rae on the left as they chased a Martin Bavidge ball in behind and Ross’s measured low centre was steered beyond Darren McConnachie by Neil McLEAN from the edge of the box. A well taken goal by the skipper, the home midfield not picking up his run.
Locos came close to doubling their advantage, firstly John Maitland curled a set-piece half a yard wide before David Ross fired over the top at the back post following a corner kick in which McConnachie failed to get enough on his attempted fist clear.
Colin Charlesworth tested debut custodian Scott Mathieson who held comfortably while at the St Andrews End Maitland came agonisingly close once more when he rose unchallenged to head inches past the far post off yet another set-piece. McConnachie denied McLean from netting his second of the afternoon after John Urquhart had lost possession cheaply in a dangerous position.
Vale made two half time changes but it was Locos who went further in front, Jordan LEYDEN tapping into the net from close range after the Vale defence failed to clear their lines following a Greg Mitchell cross from the right.
McLean almost added to the lead, while Mathieson was having an easier day than could have been expected but did have to save well from Colin Charlesworth.
