Locos and Broch share the spoils
A decent crowd greeted both sides but the game was tinged with sadness following the shock news of long-serving Locos stalwart Ron Strathdee’s death and his passing was suitably marked with a minute’s applause prior to kick-off.
Almost an entire team of Locos players was again out injured, suspended or unavailable and into the starting line-up came Errol Watson, Joe McCabe and full back Connor Rennie for his official starting debut.
Fraserburgh stormed into the lead in the fourth minute, centre forward Steven Davidson left unmarked in the box as he easily headed home Graham Johnston’s cross from the left, with Watson left rooted to the spot.
Centre half Kieran Adams collected the first yellow card after 12 minutes before a good link up between Andy Hunter, Joe McCabe and Colin Charlesworth ended with “Coco” mishitting his parting effort.
At the other end Watson had to stand tall one-on-one with Courtney Cooper after the young midfielder had been sent through by Grant Noble.
But Locos were desperately unlucky not to level late in the half when Neil McLean’s free kick from the left came to young defender Daniel Crisp whose header hit the top of the crossbar.
Further cautions followed after the restart for Broch’s Marc Dickson and Michael Rae and in 57 minutes the scores were level.
Left back Ryan Cowie had the ball in his own box but Charlesworth robbed him and forced the foul and penalty award.
Andy Hunter stepped up to hit the 19-goal mark by sending Joe Barbour the wrong way and the ball low into the corner of the net
Both sides made substitutions as they looked for a winner, David Ross on for Charlesworth and Jordan Leyden for McCabe.McLean and Broch sub Paul Campbell were the next players to be brandished yellows.
Right on the final whistle Sponsors Man of the Match Martin Bavidge had the chance to snatch victory after Hunter and Martin Laing did the spadework. The ball bobbled on Bavidge and he balooned well over.
A draw was the right result, however, and it leaves Locos in fifth place. The penultimate game of the season is this Saturday at Turriff United. Kick-off 3pm
