GARIOCH Amateur Swimming Club’s Orla Adams recently took part in the Irish National LC Championships which were held at the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin from Thursday, (July 12) to Monday, (July 16).
There were 70 clubs in attendance and it was a truly international affair with swimmers from Kuwait, Egypt, Netherlands and Lithuania taking part.
Over the four days Orla made the final in all of her eight events and medalled in the following seven events: (Female 17 & Over):
Silver, 100m Breaststroke; Silver, 400m Individual Medley; Silver, 400m Freestyle; Silver, 200m Backstroke; Silver, 200m Individual Medley; Silver, 200m Breaststroke; Bronze, 50m Breaststroke.
Orla said she was delighted with her performance in Ireland and explained, “My coach Patrick Miley wanted me to do something different with my season and targeted the Irish National Open in preference to the British Youths at Sheffield.
Sheffield is very familiar to me and I would have known many of the swimmers . Going to the Aquatics centre in Dublin was new territory for me and I didn’t have familiar faces around other than my Mum who travelled with me. This definitely helped me focus on the four day event and I swam in a few events which I would not normally target so this gave me additional challenges but I made it to all 8 finals if these events”.
Orla added, “It was a quite different experience with competitors from several countries and the organisation of the swimming heats, marshalling etc was a very new experience.”
Orla took seven medals and a number of Personal Best times including taking two seconds off her 400m Freestyle to 4.29 and in the 50m Breastroke had PBs in the heats, semis and final taking a second off her previous PB before the event.
Orla and her Mum extended their visit to Ireland to spend some time with relatives and the Garioch swimmer is now having a few weeks off swimming although says she is already starting to get withdrawal symptoms and is looking forward to getting back into the pool in August.
