The former Aberdeen boss stepped down after the latest in a run of disappointing performances.

The Pitmedden club had high hopes of success when Paterson took over in 2011 but only won the Aberdeenshire Cup...the club’s first senior trophy in 2013.

Formartine blew their best chance of the title when they lost a final day, winner takes all shootout at home to Cove Rangers.

Aspirations of silverware this season vanished with a recent home defeat by Cove Rangers in the League Cup.

They had long since given up hope of achieving anything in the league and Saturday’s result plunged United to a new low.

Assistant Craig Stewart is also leaving the club.

A statement on the club website confirming Paterson’s departure said: “Formartine United FC wish to announce an amicable parting of the ways with manager Steve Paterson and assistant manager Craig Stewart with immediate effect.

“The club wishes to express their sincere thanks to Steve and his management team for all their hard work and efforts during their tenure and for bringing the club their first trophy in the form of the Aberdeenshire Cup in 2013.”
