Surprise trialist turns out for Locos

Inverurie Locos sprung a surprise by listing former Cove Rangers goalscoring hero Martin Johnston as a trialist in their squad for the game at Clachnacuddin, but the 36 year old did not have a dream debut as the Harlaw Park side went down to a
late goal.

With Neil Gauld and Jordan Leyden out injured, Locos co bosses Kenny Coull and Scott Buchan turned their attentions to the player who had been a key figure in Cove’s 2012/13 title success. And after having appeared to have retired, he came back in October last year to help the Aberdeen side to a nine game unbeaten run before hanging up his boots again in January

However Locos co boss Buchan queried whether Johnston had ever really said he’d retired for definite, “It tells you where we’re at in terms of injuries that Martin and Kenny were both on the bench on Saturday. I think it was only the papers and media who said Martin retired. If you ask him, he’s saying he’s only had a wee break from it.

“Kenny knows him well, he has kept in touch and of course it’s a possibility he could join us. He lacks a bit of fitness and sharpness but we put him on. Sometimes you think he’ll maybe just get that bit of luck in front of goal.

“It wasn’t to be but he’ll come to us for training, we’ll get him fit. I’m quite sure he’d be an asset, he just loves playing football. Hopefully we can help each other out at the minute.

“I’m sure the fans would have loved for the club to sign him in the past, I’d have loved to have played in a team alongside him The fans were shouting for us to put him on but having not played for a number of months he was not going to last long.”
