A Marek Madle goal gave Formartine United a much-needed 2-1 win at Wick on Saturday.
Harmsworth Park is a difficult place to gain any points but United turned in a good performance to defeat the in-form Academy.
The visitors opened brightly, starting downhill in a strict 4-4-2 formation. The two banks of four sought to defend as high up the park as a fast and tricky Wick side would allow them.
Madle was causing the home side problems and a break down the inside right channel where he brushed aside a couple of challenges before whipping the ball low across the face of goal showed intent.
He then burst through the middle to fire off an angled drive that keeper McArthy did well to divert with an outstretched leg.
Formartine took the lead in the 16th minute when Munro floated a ball into the path of the speedy Duguid who kept wide before
whipping the ball low into the box.
Manson tried to smuggle it away before it was intercepted by Anderson who threaded it into Bagshaw virtually on the penalty spot and he clipped the ball neatly beyond the reach of McArthy.
Wick were out to make quick amends and managed to make and sustain enough pressure on United to have them pinned back into their own territory for long periods.
The home side equalised in the 27th minute. Mackay beat Jeffrey in a race for a through ball, drew the keeper before sending the ball through his legs into the net.
Formartine have tended to crumble when hauled back in recent weeks, but not this time. They finished the half putting Wick under pressure.
United almost too the lead on the restart when substitute McVitie’s looping header was bundled home in a goalmouth melee - but the goal was chalked off.
Wick continued to look dangerous and a snap shot by Weir brought out the best in Barney.
But the visitors grabbed the all-important second goal through the persistent Madle in the 76th minute.
On the back of sustained Formartine pressure Smith and Anderson had combined to get the ball to McVitie who managed to place his pass perfectly in range for Madle to finish with a beautiful looping header over the keeper and into the net.
Formartine then defended in depth and hit on the break and looked fairly comfortable until the end.
A brave dive at the feet of forwards by Barney and some last-ditch tackling by Hay, Jeffrey, Munro, and Smith were needed to protect the result.
