Locos players celebrate after Stuart McKay nets their fourth goal in the 4-2 victory over Fort William on Saturday

THERE was no time for wallowing after the tiring Aberdeenshire Shield home defeat by Cove Rangers as Inverurie Locos got the better of bottom side Fort William 4-2, but what looked like a runaway victory early ended up much narrower than the score suggests.

Neil McLean was started the scoring off with a great solo effort in six minutes and within a couple of minutes another in-form player, Scott Begg made it two for the Locos from a Craig Ross corner.

A short pass back in 20 minutes let Jack Strachan in for goal number three but three minutes from half time a netbound effort from home forward Davie Forbes was turned into his own net by Neil McLean.

Locos restored their three goal lead ten minutes after half time, Andy Bagshaw’s effort was blocked, and Stuart McKay netted the rebound.

There was to be no further scoring until right on the final whistle, Fort’s sub Sean Grant scoring an excellent goal.

Locos co-manager Scott Buchan said in the aftermath of the game, “In the first half hour we were very good getting to three up and hoping to add more. We then got a bit sloppy and let them in. For me the second half turned into a poor game because our decision making was wrong.

“Their keeper had a good game, I found out later from their manager Danny Conlon about his dislocated finger injury. Neil Gauld came in for Andy Bagshaw, Steven Park for Marc Young, both players were feeling it a bit tight, possibly the long journey on top of a gruelling midweek game against Cove Rangers.

“Craig Ross has missed a couple of games due to an ankle injury so we simply took him off as a precaution, we cannot afford to have any more players out injured.

“It is important to stay in the mix, players will be disappointed in their game but they did the job in the opening third of the game.”

Locos get back to home duty this Saturday, on the back of the midweek short trip to play Formartine United. Champions Forres Mechanics are the opponents at Harlaw Park with the kick-off at 3pm.
