Jogscotland Meldrum approach 1st anniversary
The excesses of the festive season have been well and truly forgotten by the Jogscotland Meldrum group as the group runs toward its first anniversary.
Led by Gemma Simpson, the ever expanding group of novice, intermediate and experienced runners are celebrating the milestone with some new kit.
Reflecting on the first year, Gemma commented: “We have an amazing group of runners, of all abilities and ages; we have junior runners below 10 years old through to more mature runners – with some sprinting toward their 60s.
“I am constantly blown away by the group’s focus, determination and team spirit.
“When we started in February 2016, with 24 runners I had no idea the group would develop so quickly, and I certainly didn’t expect to have over 70 people consistently turn up for the start of the 2017 sessions.
“Looking back over the first year I am delighted at everyone’s commitment, and I am so proud of all the runners, particularly those who joined the Zero to 5km programmes, and have continued to run.”
The running bug has well and truly bitten in Oldmeldrum.
As well as twice weekly sessions, incorporating strength and conditioning training plus endurance work, group members have participated in events across Scotland, including various Parkruns, Run Garioch, Run Balmoral, Room to Run in Huntly and the Inverness 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon races to name just a few.
And even though it is early in the year a significant number of the Jogscotland Meldrum members have already signed up for multiple races all over Scotland throughout the year.
Jogscotland is Scotland’s recreational running network, and is part of scottishathletics.
It is made up of hundreds of jogging groups located right across Scotland, meeting in sports centres, community halls, parks and businesses, and jogging on their local paths, pavements and trails.
The emphasis at every jogscotland group is on enjoying exercise and supporting one another in a friendly atmosphere.
Groups are led by qualified Jog Leaders (mostly volunteers), who guide and inspire their members.
Groups are available for walkers, joggers and runners of all levels, from complete beginners to long-distance runners.
Beginner sessions include a combination of gentle walking and jogging, with a gradual increase in jogging as fitness and confidence begin to build.
Jogscotland Meldrum meets on a Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm at Oldmeldrum Academy, and new runners are always welcome.
