INVERURIE’S rising swimming star Emily Jones has headed to Sheffield to take part in the British Gas ASA Youth Championships, which are being held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre from Tuesday to Saturday, July 17 to 21.
Following her recent excellent performances at the Scottish Gas National Championships in Edinburgh, where she won gold in the 100m Butterfly, silver in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze medals in the 200m Breaststroke and 50m Butterfly, Emily will be hoping to reach several finals.
A hectic race schedule will see Emily compete in the 100m Butterfly, 200m Butterfly, 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle over the five days.
Although Britain’s Olympic swimmers will be heading for the Royal Commonwealth pool in Edinburgh to prepare for London 2012, the ASA Youth Championships will still feature a very strong field with many of Britain’s best young swimmers taking part.
The Championships are just part of a very special time for Garioch Amateur Swimming Club Emily, she recently had the honour of being an Olympic Torch Bearer, prior to her excellent performances at the Scottish National Championships. Emily, however, is managing to keep her feet firmly on the ground. This was apparent when, straight after her part in the Olympic Torch Relay, she returned to her old school, Kellands Primary, to give delighted staff and pupils a close up view of the torch as part of the school’s UNICEF ‘Day for Change’ events.
Also representing the Garioch Club at the Championships will be Robert Bryce (17). Robert will take part in the 200m and 400m Freestyle.
